Track & Field Championship Results 2013

We apologise for sending out last year's Entry Form with the March edition of Veteranews. It was quickly spotted and so we are posting out the correct one within the next few days. Sorry about that but if you want to get your entry in early you can click here for a copy.

South West Vets have been accepted into the Wessex League for the 2012/13 season and we encourage any one interested to join in the competition.

As a Club we will pay the Club fees and the individual entry fees of any member competing for us.  This includes second claim members who are not first claim for any of the other clubs taking part in the league.

Those that are can only compete for their first claim club. Teams currently registered for the League are Bournemouth AC, Dorchester AC, Poole AC, Poole Runners, Weymouth St. Paul's Harriers & AC and Wimborne AC.

The fixtures for the season are:
Sunday 30 September     Canford Heath Middle School, Canford Heath
Sunday 21 October                   Ham Hill, Yeovil
Sunday 25 November                Hudsons Field, Salisbury
Sunday 16 December                Canford School, Canford Magna

This year the League is being organised by ‘Team Dorset’ and full details can be found on their website. Go to click on ‘Competition’, then ‘Wessex League-Cross-Country’.

One major change to the League this year is that runners will be allocated race numbers for the entire season. If the number is lost or becomes unusable the athlete is responsible for ensuring that a replacement number is displayed clearly. Club vests should also be worn and if you haven’t got one they are cheap and available from Dennis Marchant (Tel 01249 658 814).

Fixtures will normally start with the Men’s Senior and Vets’ race at 12 noon followed immediately by Senior and Vet Ladies. Please note though that the host club can suggest an alternative timetable so please check on the website before you set off.
If you want to run for us under these conditions all you have to do is to present yourself at the Race HQ in plenty of time before your first race so that you can complete a ‘Runner Application Form 2012’ and be allocated a number. Once you have been given a number you don’t need to register for subsequent races, just pitch up on the line. To save time you can download a ‘Runner Application Form 2012’ from here.

The latest edition (September '12) of Veteranews has been posted out to members. If you haven't received a copy it probably means that you have changed address - or not paid your Subs!

In either case, or for any other reason, please contact Ken Ballam, the Membership Secretary who amongst other things distributes the newsletter.

17 JUNE, 2012

Despite a dire weather forecast it stayed fine all day at the Exeter Arena on Sunday 17 June. There was a sharp drop in the numbers going for the One Hour Race but by way of compensation the Pentahlon was well supported. Full results for the event can be seen via the Results page but a list of Club Records set on the day is available here.

The awards for the best age graded performances went to Neal Tunstall (M50 Long Hurdles) and Caroline Powell (W55 400m). Interestingly that performance was not a club record as she had run fractionally quicker last year in the same event. That happened to her also in the 200 which she won comfortably but didn't beat her own record In contrast though she did this year take the 100m record!

A good day's work. I would say.

EUROPEAN TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS. The closing date  for On Line entries to the Championships in Zittau is 31 May. The date shown on the BMAF web site (16 May 2012) is in fact the closing date for paper entries so it is not too late but you had better hurry.

Neil Tunstall and Paul Guest  (both South West Vets) made up half of the GB M50 4 x 200 relay that took Gold at the World Indoor Championships  in Jyvaskyla, Finland.

Neil also collected a Silver medal in the 200 and bronze in the 4. Paul, the current British Champion in the Long Jump, missed out on a medal by less than an inch but his disappointment was  offset to a degree by adding a whopping 24 cm to his Lee Valley performance.

Caroline Powell of course won W55 medals with Silvers in the 60 and 200m sprints and Gold in the 400 (with a World Record in the heats) plus another  Gold in the 4 x 200 relay. Simon Anderson won the M45 1500 in a brilliant finish and won silver in the 3000. Julia Hubbard collected  Silvers in 200 and 400 and a Bronze in the 60m as well as a Gold in the W35 relay. Mary Wixey was of course there and picked up no less than 5 Silver medals in her W90 group.

Ian Allen won Bronze in the M45 pentathlon as did Nathan Baker in the M40 4 x 200 relay to add to his 4th place in the pentathlon.  Ian was also 4th in the long jump in an exciting and very close competition.Stuart Richards attended his first international and competed well whilst  Rob Grew also had a good Champs . He made the final of the 400 but unfortunately was unable to run it due to injury. Ian Snow (M60) was 5th in both the 800 and 1500 in his category.

Well Done to all those South West Vets that took part. We are proud of you.

NB Someone left a pair of spikes behind after the event. If they belong to you then please e mail and we will try and get them back to you.

You can also see photos from the event. Click here and we suggest you use the Search engine which works well if you want to see any particular runnerand know his race number.

RECORD BREAKERS. Arthur Johns, our Records co-ordinator, has just approved a few Road Records.

Tony Berry M75 flashed round the Bath Half in a dazzling 1.39.17 whilst ahead of him on the same day was M50 Mike O'Doherty who finished in 1.15.29 knocking off a few seconds from a record set in 1992 by Brian Millo.

Arthur has also established that last year Mike set records in the 5k in County Armagh (15.49) and 33.23 in the Bristol 10k. Well done to both of these Gentlemen!

We are hosting the BMAF Cross Country Championships at Bath University on Sunday 25 March 2012 and these will incorporate our own Club Cross Country Championship for the year. We are expecting a good entry from all over the country but here is a good opportunity for local clubs to earn themselves a team medal. Only 3 runners are required over 10 year age groups, so why not get together with some of your clubmates and get your entry in. Full details can be found in the links below:
CONGRATULATIONS to John Shapland and Norris Kington, Gold Medal winners in the SWVAC 10 Mile Road Championship held at Bideford on Sunday 9 October 2011. Their winning times were 59.23 for John in the M55 age group and 1.23.53 for M70 Norris.

Match Report: SW Athletics League - Match 3. Plymouth 3rd July 2011

A total of 5 men athletes, 1 lady athlete and 1 Official attended the 3rd South West league fixture at Plymouth. Given the World Vets Champs were about to start on the 7th July plus some clashing with other events, this level of turnout was not unexpected. That said, given we have a club membership of 350+ athletes, it would have been nice to have had more participation and support.

We were very light on Officials and would have been lost without the help of Kath and Steve Lang. Steve also ran bravely in the 400m despite carrying an Achilles injury.

In glorious July sunshine, our members yet again acquitted themselves well. We had the Men/Women 200m sprint double with Imam Qazi and Julia Hubbard winning in 23.7 secs & 25.5 secs, (PB), respectively.

In the 1500m Tony Symons and BMAF 800m champ, Stuart Macgregor were 2nd and 3rd respectivel. They bagged us 25 points in that race alone.

The 4 x 400m relay proved interesting in that due to 2 athletes being committed to officiating in the Long Jump, we missed the Senior Men's relay and were given the option of running "with" the Senior Women. What an exciting race that turned out to be, with a team made up of Middle-Distance runners and 100/200m sprinters, we knocked out 4:20:08, just 0.4 seconds off Newton Abbot AC's Senior Men's time.

It certainly capped off an enjoyable and fun day.

Team Manager

Results of the 2011 Track & Field Championships are now up on the Results page.

South West Athletics League 2011 Division Two

Match Report - Millfield  29 May 2011

A successful and enjoyable day was had by all. In total we had 13 Athletes competing and/or officiating, which is a vast improvement on the 5 of us at Braunton for the first leg. We had 11 men and 2 ladies, who all acquitted themselves well.

It was encouraging seeing us field 3 athletes for some events as well. We even had strength in depth in the Relay, which was nice .In fact, I thought I was going to have a nice problem, in that I would have a selection dilemma for some events! I won't go into too much detail about results and times as they can be seen on the Results page.

Special mention has to go to our F35 Sprinter, Julia Hubbard for her sprint double in the Women's 100/200m..Julia has certainly taken Vets Athletics by storm after her BMAF Indoors double Gold medals in February. I also must give praise to M55 Steve Lang for his win in his 200m race and entering 3 other events - plus helping with officiating.

Yet again I was impressed with the versatility of our athletes, in the way they happily entered events that were alien to them. Many of our members did 2 or 3 events or more, which is excellent.
In fact, Ken Jackson did 5 in total by my counting and got a 2nd in his 100m and he was only just pipped at the post in a close race. Without trying to focus on times, I feel that I must give some recognition to Imam Qazi our M35 sprinter for his very quick 11.5secs for 100m and M50 Franklyn Young for his 18 mins 25.5secs in the 5000m.

We must also not forget the vital work that our officials do as well. Without officials, Athletics would grind to a halt; so many thanks to our main Officials, John, Cath & Bill and the other athletes who mucked in and helped. What we have to put into perspective is that we have managed to more than hold our own against people much younger and fitter than us, which is quite an achievement.
I must also congratulate Ginette and Ian, Stuart, Malcolm, Chris and Bill for their strong and brave running displays, particularly in the Middle and Long Distance events.

Well Done to everyone on making what was a lovely day out.I look forward to seeing you all soon at one of the many forthcoming Athletics Meetings, in what is going to be a very busy 6 weeks or so for our athletes.

Rob Bates
Team Manager

Congratulations to Karen Rushton (W40) and Helen Ambrosen (W50) who both set Club Championship Records at the North Dorset Marathon in times of 3.10.12 and 3.34.25 respectively. Karen was in fact the first Lady finisher.

Well Done, Ladies!

The recent League fixture  at Braunton went well and everyone enjoyed themselves.

We are still however, looking for more athletes, especially Women and Field Eventers. We could also do with some more Officials. Our next fixture is at Millfield School, Street in Somerset.A  stunning facility set in picturesque surroundings. There is also the Clarks village nearby, if anyone wants any bargain Running shoes !

That is on the 29th May 2011 and the events that you can enter on that day are:
MEN:     400 Hurdles        100m     5 000m  200m     800m     4x100 Relay        High Jump   Triple Jump       Shotput                 Javelin
LADIES:     400 Hurdles    3 000m    100m   200m     800m     4x100 Relay        Pole Vault           Hammer                Discus                 Long Jump
The programme changes for the following round at Plymouth on 3 July so if nothing of the above takes your fancy there is another chance for you to select your favourite event.

For more details, please call Rob Bates on 01626 438826 or email at .

Last Sunday South West Vets broke new ground when for the first time we made an appearance in the South West Athletics League at Braunton, North Devon. The league is split into two divisions and so, naturally, we had to start off in Division Two along with other teams from Newton Abbot, Wimborne, North Devon AC, Dorchester, NewquaY & Par and Mendip AC.

We are at a disadvantage because we have no athletes of an age to compete in the younger age groups but our small team acquitted themselves well and more importantly enjoyed the day. The next fixture in the League is on Sunday 29 May 2011 at Millfield School and if you would like to join us on the day then please get in touch with the Team manager, Rob Bates (

The photo above along with the one on the Home Page was taken by Mark Shuttleworth and you can see all the photos taken at Braunton on his web site

The latest edition of the Veteranews has now been posted out to members. I f you haven't received yours then please contact the Membership Secretary and he will sort you out. In the meantime you can see the on-line version by going to the Veteranews page.

Of particular interest in this edition is our participation in the South West Athletics League and the build up to our 25th Anniversary Track & Field Championships.

At Yeovilton on Wednesday 11 August Roger Rowe tore through the 5k course in a new M65 Club Record time of 19.10 beating the previous best by over half a minute. On further investigsation itwas discovered that he also broke the M60 record in 2005 on the same course. His time then was 18.10 and that has, rather belatedly, been confirmed as the new record.

Are there any more records out there that we don't know about?

Arthur Kimber, on Behlf of the BMAF has invited us to submit a team for the Inter Area Track & Field Championships to be held on Sunday 8 August 2010 at the Solhull Track.

Those interested in representing South West Vets at this event should contact Peter Fairbank on telephone 01202 247 076 or email

More details on our Fixtures Page

Steve Hollier set a new Club Half marathon record at Bideford over the weekend in the M60 Group.

His time of 1.19.15 shaved a few seconds of the previous record set by Roger Rowe in Exeter 5 years ago.

Gold for Simon in Canada!

At the World Masters Indoors Championships in British Columbia this week Simon Anderson picked up Gold in the Cross Country, Gold in the 1500 and Silver for the 3000 - plus a Team Silver in the Cross Country.

Well Done, Simon, and we look forward to seeing you on the outdoor track again during the coming season.

To start off the New Year BMAF have published an updated list of standards which can be seen on their website. A lot of work has gone into compiling them and so I suggest that you have a look at them and see how you measure up against them.

The Standards have been revised with two things in mind. First of all it lays down standards for medals at National meetings so that the medals are meaningful and earnt rather than just being awarded because no one else turned up. Secondly, and more importantly, they establish goals for all of us. Based on previous performances I am confident on my favourite events but as a New Year Resolution I intend to have a crack at as many of the other events as I can. I might give the Pole Vault and Hurdles a miss but I can't do myself much harm in the rest. If any of you get all of the standards for your age/gender we would like to hear from you. There's a challenge to some of you Multi Eventers!

We do of course have our own set of standards and as to be expected they are lower than the the BMAF ones but the same principles apply. Pick which ones you want to use as a target. Ours can be found on this website and click here for the National ones.

For interest the new BMAF standards are based on actual results in the BMAF Indoor [8,666 performances] and Outdoor [14,771 performances] Championships between 1996 and 2009 taking into consideration the top 80% of perfomances in each event. They were then adjusted to produce a smooth progression from age groups and they will be monitored as time goes by to sort out any anomalies. To get all this done was a task of epic proportions and we are grateful to Ian Thomas for all the number crunching. Thanks Ian.

After years of using the Alexander Stadium., Birmingham, we have been caught out this year by the fact that they are relaying the track on our traditional dates in July. Maurice Doogan, the hardworking BMAF Track & Field Secretary, has however successfully negotiated for the use of the Cardiff International Sports Stadium over the weekend 3 - 4 July 2010.

He has also secured a very good hotel package at the Park Inn, Cardiff West. This is highly recommended because it is excellent value for money and gives all competitors to meet in a more relaxed and less competitive atmosphere. Entry forms and details of the hotel package will be posted in due course on the BMAF website.
